London-based promoters Soundcrash head south for the next instalment of their Funk & Soul Weekender. Set in Pontins Camber Sands, the Maytime festival samples the best of funk and soul (and jazz, hip hop, disco, electronic, funk, and so on) and situates it in a quintessentially English seaside resort. Here, tents are swapped for chalet accommodation, and a quiet coastal retreat is drowned out by the best of global heavyweights, UK promoters and labels.
The line-up speaks for itself. Joining Mr Scruff, Crazy P, and George Clinton and his full Parliament Funkadelic band is the iconic eighties outfit Soul II Soul, whose innovative blend of R&B, disco, reggae, and soul makes for a fitting headline act. Also announced are live performances from Submotion Orchestra, The Herbaliser, and The Mouse Outfit, alongside DJ sets from esteemed selectors Gilles Peterson and Greg Wilson. Throw in the likes of Hot 8 Brass Band and Norman Jay into the mix and the result is a promisingly eclectic and undeniably funked-up weekend.
