As soon as stuff people do anyway has mainframe-sex with the internet it becomes more of a thing. Nothing tells this story quite like the #Selfie pandemic. People always take pictures of themselves, and pictures of themselves with other people but it has now become a fad that capitalises on the avatar-constructing front camera that people get on the front of their smartphones. They did it at the Oscars and people went, “FUCK! LOADS OF FAMOUS PEOPLE TAKING A PHOTO LIKE THE ONES WE TAKE!”. It’s become a handy tool for juggernaut superstars to put together a kind of flatpack humility but it’s also become something normal peasants do as well when they do hilarious stuff like taking a shit, going to see ‘Noah’ or looking after a random fucking baby.
The Chainsmokers aren’t stupid, they’ve seen this swarm and spotted a gap in the market for it’s soundtrack. Cue, ‘#SELFIE’ the Napa-ready hymn for the 4G generation. At Shuf, we don’t like to sneer at these 50 million+ crazes and then go back to dusty SoundCloud wastelands- we sent the Chainsmokers some questions about their manifesto and their snowballing success. This is their side of the story. You might only understand it if you’re pretty sexy and stuff.
What makes the perfect selfie?
Its not so much about how good looking you are but about your expression and location… that said if you are hot, that definitely doesn’t hurt…
Where did you get the idea for the song?
It was totally arbitrary, we wanted to make a song that said Let Me take a selfie and have it revolve around stupid things you hear ppl say in the club and concepts… When it was done we weren’t sure if we had the best song ever or the worst….
How does it feel to know that 10 million have watched you Selfie song?
It feels cool, we haven’t dealt in numbers like that so its pretty surreal. We try not to think about it much…
Whats the craziest thing thats happened to you guys since this video blew up?
We walked into an IN n Out in Lake Havesu and some ppl [sic] noticed us and started chanting the chainsmokers, next thing you know the entire restaurant is slow clapping,,,, was epic!!!!
There's been mixed responses to the track online (some people call it the best song ever, some call it the worst) how do you respond to this kind of feedback?
Postively, who cares, you cant please everyone, we do enjoy replying to everyone we can positive or negative, and just keep it real, its cool to hate #selfie, or nah.. whatever
What's next for Chainsmokers?
We have tons of new music coming up this song has opened up some collab opportunities that we couldn’t have imagined. We are going to keep being us, releasing music frequently, relating to ppl as much as we can and just doing things we think ppl will find amusing. There are so many things we look forward to doing…
What message would you like to give to your fans in the UK?
That we cannot fucking wait to come play our first show there! The UK has always been the leaders of music and anytime we have gone over there its always a life experience. The UK gets down…
You hear that? We get down! Fucking yes!
To be fair, they don’t seem like terrible people and I’ve definitely done my good deed of the day by giving them a platform to talk as musicians rather than hashtag-slanging robotrons. The #Selfie tour is currently galavanting around America and the NYC duo have undeniably built a lot out of very little. I say that, but I just went on their Facebook page and they have told fans they like selfies of girls in yoga pants. Make your own mind up.
