Lithuanian label Cold Tear Records have been releasing ambient, deep and dub techno since 2010. With the label’s surprising approach that allows their releases to be torrented and freely downloaded online, their latest EP, Confined Spaces by Monodisc, is up for free download (or a mere €3) on the Dutch artists’ Bandcamp page.

Your Eternal Gaze starts us off. Samples of muffled vocal, field recordings of falling rain, and rising, reverberating chords, combine to produce a track with a huge amount of space behind it.

Thoughtless Sleep is a prime example of careful production of a track in its entirety. An introduction consisting of warm, building dub chords paves the way for a rumbling kick drum, and an outro of similar caress. This track feels tighter than the others, increasingly so when house hi-hats come in around the three minute mark.

Title track Confined Spaces is a nicely layered track with booming synths backed with a thudding kick drum, and The Longest Drive Home is a spacious, tension building, ten-minute journey. But the jewel of the release has to be Flock, a smooth deep-techno spectacular. A beautiful crescendo of chord, reverb and more vocal sampling drops gracefully into keys, hats and claps.

Try this one out for Flock, but stay for the rest. Each of the tracks on Monodisc’s latest record are sublimely crafted from start to finish - no sound is out of place, unwanted or unnecessary.
