Squarepusher’s project Shobaleader One provided me with one of the best albums of 2017 for such personal vinyl digger reasons. What happened was I became entrenched in a world of wax that strictly involved the bassiest of techno or the trippiest of trance. I had blinkers on and was determined to find the next big thing in the dustiest section of my local wax provider's shop. Then, one day, when I was browsing a second-hand vinyl group on a well known social media platform I received a notification about Shobaleader One being live on Boiler Room. For the next 30 minutes I was hooked on the inspiring jazz, hip-hop infused electronica I was witnessing. With a simple set up and a dazzling array of strobes, I remembered that there was more to electronic music than just programming a slamming kick on Ableton; actual instruments were integral. Despite this being an obvious parameter of creating music I think its easy to forget as I did. Maybe it was out of pure naivety but thankfully Shobaleader One took me out of this. Their album Elektrac goes from the mellow and beautiful like The Swifty and Iamic 5 Poetry to the hectic like Anstromm Feck and E8 Boogie, culminating in what I can easily call my favourite track of 2017 with the most infectious hook, Journey To Reedham.
